Episode 40: An African Folktale on Self-Determination

What does self-determination mean to you? What things threaten your right to self-determination? For people of color around the world, the right to self-determination is supreme yet has been undermined by colonialism, systemic racism, and economic inequality. Many Black and Brown people have fought--some successfully, others unsuccessfully--for their right to self-determination. Yet, to many, it remains a vague notion. The Espresso Talk Today Team discusses the right to self-determination through one of its favorite forms of education: storytelling. Elder Mellanese returns to present this African story called "The Three Tests" in which the animals fight to protect their country and their lives. Enjoy this story and consider how you would protect your right to self-determination. What would you do?
